Technology training for youth in underserved communities.

Know what’s inspiring? Reading about Jamaicans doing great things in their community. Know what else is inspiring? Reading how they are doing these great things. Most inspiring of all is getting to know the individual’s story of greatness. This story is about a man’s PRYDE.

“Replace negative thoughts with positive ones and you’ll start having positive results”. Living by this puts despondency at bay and lessens unnecessary anxiety. This sentiment is how Lafayette Hamilton has managed to overcome and excel.

Mr. Hamilton is a father of four and a husband who repeatedly credits his stability and inspiration to a wonderful wife and family. While living with his uncle for his teenage years, Lafayette learned valuable lessons in punctuality, business acumen and how to navigate life. After High school he migrated to the U.S. and joined the Navy where he spent six years and continuously excelled. This earned him the opportunity to choose any field he desired to pursue. The opportunity, offered by the Chief of Naval Operations, was a first for any serviceman.

After leaving the Navy he worked with some of the biggest Technology companies in the world, as he gained more skills and knowledge he yearned to do more, especially for his community. Unfortunately, he was unable to because of the challenging economic conditions at the time in 2009. Lafayette was unemployed and on the brink of losing everything but his strength and faith in God led him to look beyond his own challenges and to find the inspiration that he needed. Later that year he founded The PRYDE Foundation.

The PRYDE Foundation is a non-profit organization that focuses on youth in underserved communities. The organization’s objective is to train and support at-risk youth ages 17-21 in the areas of IT and entrepreneurship.

To date, the PRYDE Foundation has transformed many lives. It has provided training and scholarships for students in the US, Jamaica and Guyana. The young people who benefit from the Foundation’s support will find opportunities if they commit to working hard. ‘I want the youth to understand that there’s more to life than sitting on a corner. I want to be able to provide opportunities and teach them how to do the same for others.”
