Digital Learning Company SmartGurlz Launches Equity Crowdfunding Campaign

ARLINGTON, Va. – October 23, 2020 – SmartGurlz, makers of robots, apps, and action dolls, as well as the Smart Buddies educational program, launched an equity crowdfunding campaign today on the WeFunder platform. As seen on Shark Tank and in coverage from ABC, CNN, Forbes, and the Financial Times, SmartGurlz seeks to engage and educate girls and kids of color using a diverse range of programmable robots that help teach coding skills.

The story of SmartGurlz began when CEO and co-founder Sharmi Albrechtsen saw that her 8-year-old daughter was struggling to see the relevance of math and computer science. “All of the robotics and coding products on the market were masculine and militarized, with tank-like wheels, blades and bazookas,” says Albrechtesen, “and they sent the clear message: ‘This is for boys.’” Albrechtsen and her team then set out to develop products that would engage girls as well as kids of color, helping to make STEM education more inclusive.

Having launched a successful line of action dolls and their programmable scooters, SmartGurlz has released Smart Buddies, a coding kit for schools. Available for in-person or at-home learning, Smart Buddies covers fundamental coding concepts such as sequences, loops, events, conditionals, functions, and variables. The program also contains a literacy component and addresses social-emotional learning and STEM career paths.

“Thanks to hundreds of teachers and schools interested in our products,” Albrechtsen says, “we have partnered with Pitsco Education – former Lego Education distributor – to create a unique common-core curriculum focused on inclusivity and diversity in computer science.” Poised to launch Smart Buddies as an in-person learning tool in early 2020, the company pivoted quickly after Covid-19 hit, reinventing SmartBuddies as an e-learning kit.

The Smart Buddies live remote learning program earned positive coverage from Good Housekeeping, Parade, Daily Mom, Romper, Fox News, Good Morning Los Angeles, and many other media outlets. In addition, Good Morning America named Smart Buddies one of the best gifts to give during the pandemic.

SmartGurlz has raised more than $2.7M so far through investments from Morgan Stanley, New York University, and numerous individual investors.
